In far west Texas, east of El Paso, is
a state historic site called Hueco
Tanks.  It is large outcroppings of
rough stone, hundreds of feet high in
the Chihuahuan desert. Natural
hollows, or “huecos” as they are
called in Spanish, catch and store
rainwater. For over ten thousand
years, these sheltered cisterns have
meant survival for humans.
At one hueco, the water can be reached
only by laying down on your belly and
scooting forward enough to be able to
stretch down and dip out water.
Countless generations of humans
rubbing their bodies over the rough
stone have worn the edge of the hueco
as smooth as polished marble. Their
story of the effort to reach the deep
calm waters is also our story.
